Harley-Davidson® History

Harley-Davidson® motorcycles are some of the most well-known in the world. But even the most iconic industry giants have to start somewhere. If you've ever been curious as to how Harley® motorcycles got their start, read on!

The Beginning

Two childhood friends founded the company: William S. Harley® and Arthur Davidson. Their first creation was a single-cylinder engine that they attached to the classic pedal bike design. The machine worked, but it didn't pack enough power to get up the steep hills of Milwaukee. So they went back to the drawing board. They ended up creating an engine that worked with a bike that didn't use pedals. This paved the way for the first true release of a Harley® motorcycle in 1904.

The duo continued innovating and improving their Harley® motorcycles. Over time, they saw enough success that they were able to open a factory! This allowed them to create and distribute their iconic machines at a much faster pace than ever before. They also continued to innovate. In seven years, their engines operated at twice the horsepower as their original design. Soon these high performing machines were spotted on the racetrack as a true test of their capabilities.
 

Creating a Name for Themselves

With the rise of World War One, there was a high need for motorcycles. Harley-Davidson® received an order for 20,000 Harley® models. At the end of 1920, the company got the title "largest motorcycle manufacturer on the planet," and everyone wanted their own Harley-Davidson® motorcycle. The company became one of two that continually operated throughout the Great Depression. Then, World War Two came, and with it an order for 90,000 more Harley® motorcycles.
